On August 6th 1912 Patrick Anthony Ludden, the first Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Syracuse, died at the age of 76. Ludden was born in 1836 in Ireland and moved to North America in the early 1860s. He was ordained a priest in 1864 and attached to the Diocese of Albany. On December 14th 1886 Ludden was assigned to the newly formed Diocese of Syracuse by Pope Leo XIII and consecrated as a bishop on May 1st 1887. During his 25 years as bishop the diocese roughly doubled in size. Ludden is buried in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse and Bishop Ludden Junior/Senior High School in Geddes is named in honor of him.
