This off-site exhibit is located at the corner of East Fayette and South Salina Streets in the former D. McCarthy, Sons & Co. building and includes clothing and shoes once sold at the 19th century department store along with trade cards and advertisements. A portrait of the store’s second owner, Dennis McCarthy, Sr., by George Kasson Knapp (1897) is also featured.
The building was constructed in 1893 as headquarters for the McCarthy Department Store and was sold by the family less than two decades later in 1905. The building would continue to be used as a retail site and became the home of the Lincoln Department Store. In the 1960s, renovations covered the historic facade of the building before Washington St. Partners restored the building to its 19th century glory.
Please connect with the building’s owners for information on how you can visit this exhibit.
