Hawley-Green House Tour

Have you ever admired the Victorian architecture in the Hawley-Green neighborhood, and wondered about the history behind the beautiful homes? On Saturday, June 18, starting at 10:00 am, you can take a guided tour of the neighborhood and learn about the rich history that this area is built on.

Tours will begin at the First English Lutheran Church (501 James Street), and will depart at the top of each hour from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The one-mile tour will lead visitors to eight different stops on Burnet Ave, Hawley Ave, Howard Street, Gertrude Street, and Green Street. At each home, tour-goers will learn about the history behind the building and get to see original features such as pressed tin ceilings, marble fireplaces, and mahogany woodwork that have been preserved over the years.

In between houses, visitors will learn stories about the people and events that shaped the neighborhood. For example, did you know that the first wave of residents that came in the 1840’s were craftsmen? Blacksmiths, carpenters, silversmiths, and shoe makers once filled the houses lining Gertrude Street.
